Wrist Tendonitis

Symptoms of Wrist Tendinitis

You might be suffering from wrist tendonitis if:

  • You're suffering from limited movement and unable to stretch out your hand and wrist.
  • You have swelling in your wrist.
  • You have tenderness in your wrist.
  • You may feel tingling or numbness in your fingers and hand.

work related wrist injuries can happen to anyone

If you found yourself agreeing with many of these statements or you're suffering from on-going pain in your wrist and hand then you might have an Extensor Tendonitis wrist injury.

An Overview of Wrist Tendinitis

Tendinitis in the wrist

Tendonitis of the wrist is quite common among athletes; over a quarter of all athletic injuries involve injuries to the wrist or hand. Overuse injuries to the wrist usually involves tendonitis, tenosynovitis, stress fractures and tunnel syndromes (ie. carpal tunnel syndrome). The wrist provides positioning and support for the hand, combining strength, specific positioning and stability with a wide range of movement.

Tendons in the wrist are closely attached to the joint, and this results in high tension in these tendons when powering wrist movement. The anatomy of the wrist is essentially unstable, relying on the restraint of many tendons, muscles and ligaments to prevent collapse of the carpal bones. Any condition affecting the function of the wrist tendons will definitely result in a reduction of grip strength.

Injury to tendons in the wrist typically originate from work related movement (usually from forceful repetitive actions) or from sport activities that involve forced, repetitive overuse of the write. Clarity in determining cause is difficult, as factors such as gender, neurogenic (nerve), hormones and mechanics influence the level of risk for wrist tendonitis.

When it comes to treatment of your hand and wrist, it doesn't matter if your tear is bad enough that it requires surgery. Whether you need surgery or not - either way you should be treating your wrist tendonitis injury and pain consistently, every day, at home. It's important during this time... whether its early on in your injury or not, before or after surgery, during recovery and rehabilitation - to listen to your doctor / physical therapist and take on some of your treatment efforts at home.

Your doctor and physical therpist will recommend conservative treatment options for you to treat your wrist. They'll do this even before you get an MRI, x-ray or go under any other diagnostic testing. They don't do this to annoy you, they simply do this because they know no matter what kind of soft tissue injury you have the most important thing is to start dealing with the injury before it worsens and help your body to heal as soon as possible.

Often when a tendon injury occurs, the injured area is rested a bit, a pain killer is taken and we continue on with our normal activities. If the strain was minor, the body may be able to heal the tendon fibers normally. Unfortunately, this is not the usual result because the injured tendon is being used instead of rested. Because of the stress on the tendon, the body heals the injured fibers by binding them together with fibrotic adhesions or scar tissue. This is done in an attempt to prevent further damage to the injured area. It is a normal protective response of the body.

Hand Tendonitis & Wrist Tendonitis Conservative Treatment Options

If you have tendinitis in your hand or wrist, rest is highly recommended. Avoid activities that cause pain or may have caused the inflammation and begin cold compression treatments as soon as possible.

During the healing process, scar tissue builds on the damaged tendons; this scar tissue can cause the tendon to thicken, decreasing the area in tight spaces (such as the wrist), increasing the chance of nerve impingement. Nerve impingement in the wrist is basically what Carpal Tunnel Syndrome describes.

In addition, know that scar tissue attaches to everything. It can bind tendons, ligaments, muscles, bone and even skin together wherever it grows. Inflexible scar tissue will limit movement of your soft tissue very quickly. Tendons and muscles that were once elastic are now constrained - if you stretch it too far it will start to rip, causing spikes of pain. As a result, movement of the entire joint is limited, making it difficult to flex your hand and/or wrist or even grasp objects. At the very least, scar tissue leaves a tendon weaker than a healthy tendon, leaving injury at greater risk of further deterioration and possible tearing.

The trick to any tendon injury is getting it to heal with minimal scar tissue formation and with as much realignment of tendon fibers as possible. To achieve this, your doctor will most likely recommend up to 6 months of conservative treatments. Even with optimum healing there is always less elasticity in a previously injured tendon. The trick is to make sure you heal it the best you can, that way your chance of re-injury down the road is much lower than average - which is well over 50%.

Once the inflammation of your tendinitis has been reduced through use of a Cold Compress or Ice Pack, nourishing and strengthening of the hand/wrist tendons, muscles and surrounding area is recommended - this includes our recommendation of stretching and home treatments using the Wrist TShellz Wrap®. Talk to your doctor or physical therapist to find out which exercises are appropriate for your situation.

Conservative Treatment Step 1: Reduce The Initial Inflammation & Manage Pain

If the hand or wrist tendon injury is very recent - use a good quality cold pack and Arnica Pain Relief Cream. If the injury has been going on for awhile and there is little to no swelling or inflammation, skip to Step 2 below.

Inflammation is the body's natural response to an immediate tendon or muscle injury and is a normal part of the healing process - helping to reduce tissue infection in the early stages of injury. Swelling, pain, heat sensation, redness, and loss of function are the main symptoms experienced.

Don't let wrist tendonitis slow you down

The wrist will continue to be inflamed until you allow it to rest from the pain-causing activity. Continued damage will cause chronic inflammation, secondary adhesion and general degeneration of the tendon. The tendon sheath itself with probably be injured as the tendon swells, increasing the pain of the condition. When treating the wrist tendon(s), most physical therapists recommend to rest the area, apply cold compression for 10-20 minutes at a time for at least 3 times a day until the swelling stays down. Some patients, including those with poor circulation, are more susceptible to cold treatments which is why we recommend consulting with your medical professional with regard to cold and/or heat applications.

The combination of rest, topical pain relief cream and minor amounts of cold is the gold standard in medicine for minimizing tissue damage and reducing inflammation after injury or activity. It serves as a critical bridge into the next phase of the healing process.

Use a Cold Compress or Ice Pack:

  • 24 to 72 hours after your initial tendon injury or when you first notice pain and swelling in your hand or wrist to stop tissue damage at the microscopic level, relieve pain, and decrease swelling.
  • After using a keyboard or mobile phone or hand/wrist activity of any kind to prevent worsening the injury.
  • Before and after surgery during rehabilitation to control pre and post-surgery pain and swelling.
  • Anytime you feel your hand or wrist has been over-extended, over-worked, twisted, strained or sprained causing pain and swelling.
  • Anytime you have swelling, sharp throbbing pain or inflammation in the tendons and/or muscles of your hand/wrist.
  • Any other situation where you need to draw the pain and inflammation out of your hand and/or wrist.

Conservative Treatment Step 2: Enhance Blood Flow to the Injured Soft Tissue

Tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and some muscle fibres are dense tissues. As a result, they naturally receive limited blood flow and this is precisely why injuries to these tissues take so long to heal. The challenge is, how do you effectively increase blood flow to these tissues?

  • Rigorous exercise is out of the question as it will lead to further injury.
  • Visits to the clinic are helpful, but that only happens a few times a week.

Increased Blood Circulation = Increased Healing Capability

TShellz Wraps® contain a unique Carbon Fiber Energy Pad which is flexible and will shape to conform to your body. This Energy Pad emits a uniform wave of perfectly safe energy over its entire surface. This energy is absorbed by soft tissue in the treatment area, opening blood vessels, resulting in an increase in blood flow. Increased blood circulation is what your body needs to accelerate the healing of soft tissue and this is why we recommend the TShellz Wrap®.

The Wrist TShellz Wrap® is an FDA Registered Medical Device and is suitable for use in therapeutic clinics and FROM HOME. It is completely safe for people and patients to use for themselves.

The technology found in a TShellz Wrap® has been used for decades in the worlds of professional and amateur sports - a contributing factor as to why athletes seem to recover from injuries so quickly.

Have you ever wondered by an athlete can return to activity after 3 or 4 weeks following a wrist injury - while your average person takes much longer to return back to normal? The secret isn't really that much of a secret - it involves consistent treatments (meaning multiple times a day) using a treatment like the TShellz Wrap® to stimulate blood flow to the injured tissues. Most athletes have the luxury of using in-house facilities many times per day.

How many us can afford the time and money to visit a clinic multiple times a day? Very few indeed. This is how you can gain some of the advantages that athletes enjoy in their injury recovery - by using a device like the Wrist TShellz Wrap® two or three times a day on a consistent basis.

Consistent Treatments = Consistent And Long Term Improvement

What Else Makes the Wrist TShellz Wrap® So Special?

We believe the TShellz Wrap® to be one of the most effective home treatments to increase localized blood flow to soft tissue in and around the treatment area.

We can promise that you will receive a product that is designed to be safe and does what it is supposed to do... reduce pain (as stated in "Therapeutic Heat and Cold", 4th edition. - Ed. Justus F. Lehmann, M.D., Williams, and Wilkin) temporarily increase length & flexibility of soft tissue (as stated in "Therapeutic Heat and Cold", 4th edition. - Ed. Justus F. mendmeshop arnica pain relief cream

This is a product that many of our current MendMeShop customers asked us to develop. So we focused our time and resources over the past few years and came up, with we believe, will be one of more effective, fast acting, topical pain relief creams on the market.

You are likely familiar with some of the standard topical agents on the market as most of our customers use them. The are mass marketed and even found in most department stores now.

Well, we are here to say that Arnica Infusion goes many steps beyond what they offer.

Made in the USA at an FDA registered manufacturing facility, you can be assured that Arnica Infusion is both safe and effective. We only source top grade ingredients while implementing strict quality control checks during every step of the production process. Expect the same high quality that MendMeShop customers have been accustomed to since we started the company in 2005.

The "Cool Blue" formula is the perfect balance between the smooth application of a cream and the effective absorbing factor of a gel. It is not too thick and not too thin - just the right texture. Best of all, it feels very nice on the skin!

Each application of Arnica Infusion feels so comforting and soothing, we are certain it will become an item you will not want to live without.

Arnica Infusion Ingredients

The Arnica Infusion formula is based on a combination of scientific research and the use of high quality ingredients. The properties within the formula were chosen for their pain relief, anti-inflammatory, and soothing qualities.

The acting ingredients within the formula include ones many of us are familiar with; along with ones that have not received a lot of publicity (only in research circles). Extensive testing resulted in a blending of ingredients that provides the most synergistic of benefits.

The notable ingredients in the Arnica Infusion formula include:

  • Arnica - powerful anti-inflammatory, speeds recovery, enhances circulation
  • Menthol - provides deep penetrating pain relief with a nice cooling sensation
  • Vitamin B6 - promotes normal nerve function
  • MSM - supports healthy connective tissues, anti-inflammatory
  • Ilex Leaf Extract - increases circulation, skin conditioner
  • Vitamin E - anti-inflammatory, enhances circulation, hydrates the skin
  • Aloe - anti-inflammatory properties, soothes the skin

A Note On OverCompensation

Since you are reading this, you probably know that serious tendonitis or tendinosis injuries do not just disappear. Over time, they usually wreak havoc on other joints in the body due to lack of movement and over-compensation. Recovery takes a longer time for such chronic (long term) injuries, but proper healing is essential to regain strength and get you back to the activities you enjoy.

The longer your injury endures, the greater the risk of running into serious overcompensation injuries.

When you are experiencing pain when you move your wrist or hand on your right arm, for example, your body will automatically overcompensate this problem and you will start using your left hand or wrist more often. Typically, overuse injuries occur on the dominant hand/wrist - and this means when you overcompensate, you are using your weaker hand & wrist for tasks normally reserved for your dominant arm. You will find that the weaker hand/wrist is not prepared for the level of activity and use and quickly begins to undergo strain. This means that now you will be experiencing pain and probably inflammation on BOTH wrists and/or hands due to overcompensation - this is why we highly advise that you take care of your original wrist injury fast! If you don't, there is a strong likelihood that you will start experiencing significant problems in the other hand/wrist quite quickly.

To Stop Re-Injury & Reduce the Risk of a More Serious Overcompensation Injury, You Need to Heal Quickly & Completely!

Anyone in need of rapid recovery and complete healing must consider a comprehensive treatment plan that includes an effective means to minimize swelling and inflammation yet also stimulate blood flow and tissue elasticity. We have found no better set of tools that can be used at home than this:

TShellz Wrap® = Enhanced Blood Flow in the Treatment Area

We believe the use of TShellz Wraps® for boosting blood flow to soft tissue in the area of application is one of the most under-utilized home treatment options available on the market today. We have client after client that have tried many options out there and have been amazed at how effective and fast the TShellz Wrap treatment can relieve pain and increase blood flow in soft tissue.

With regular use of the Wrist TShellz Wrap:

  • Your pain will be reduced*.
  • Due to increased blood flow, soft tissue in the treatment area on the wrist/hand will be expected to recover at an accelerated rate with reduced potential for re-injury*.
  • Tissue in the treated area should experience a larger range of motion and increased extensibility of collagen tissue* due to the heat effect on soft tissue. This should translate into a reduced rate of re-injury occurrence as soft tissue is known to lengthen and become more flexible when exposed to warm temperature. (*Chapter 9 of "Therapeutic Heat and Cold", 4th edition. (amazon.com link - Ed. Justus F. Lehmann, M.D., Williams, and Wilkin)

*Know that every personal soft tissue injury is unique and the TShellz Wrap may not work for everyone. This is why we offer a 60-day money back return on all our TShellz Wrap devices.

horizontal wrist tshellz wrap

Using the TShellz Wrap® is truly a unique experience. Within moments of applying a treatment to your injured wrist, you can feel the healing sensation due to the increase in blood flow deep within the area. During a treatment, and for quite some time after you finish, the treated area will feel relaxed and less painful. It's a very soothing sensation and extremely effective.

Who Should Use the Wrist TShellz Wrap®

We recommend the use of a Wrist TShellz Wrap®:

  • If you have bursitis, tendinitis or other soft tissue damage in your wrist, then the Wrist TShellz Wrap® will provide the all-important function of boosting blood circulation where it is needed most.
  • If you are dealing with soft tissue conditions affecting your range of motion.
  • If you have a chronic soft tissue wrist condition that has lasted for years- this device is intended to kick start the recovery process and help strengthen the surrounding and supporting tissues.
  • If you are still working with a wrist strain or mild tear, the TShellz Wrap® will help relax tissue in the wrist prior to work and after a day at the job.
  • If you are still trying to enjoy your favorite activities such as gardening, tennis, golf, etc - use the TShellz Wrap® prior to activity to help reduce risk of re-injuring or re-aggravating those targeted tissues.
  • If you are suffering from bursitis and want to treat a major source of it (inflammation and damage to tissue surrounding the bursa sac). Through trauma, overuse or degenerative changes, muscle and tendons surrounding the bursa sacs will tighten and constrict. When they do, they place pressure on the bursa, causing it to become irritated. Applying a TShellz Wrap® to the area will help relax tissue in the treatment area, taking pressure off the bursa.
  • If you are experiencing atrophy in your wrist and want to reduce the chance of re-injury while stretching - this is a perfect treatment to use every time before you stretch.
  • If you have been to a clinic for some form of massage or stretching and your PT or physician has recommended conservative treatments for home.
  • If you are experiencing atrophy in your wrist/hand/forearm and want to reduce the chance of re-injury (or further injury) while stretching - this is a perfect treatment to use on a regular basis, by enhancing blood flow and elongating soft tissue.
  • If you are experiencing tightness in your muscle(s) and want to reduce the chance of re-injury while stretching - we recommend the use of a TShellz Wrap® before you stretch.

Increased Blood Circulation = Increased Healing Capability

What Else Makes the TShellz Wrap® So Special?

The TShellz Wrap® will stimulate blood flow in the local area, while also warming up the tissue. It is known that warmed tissue will experience a larger range of motion and increased extensibility and this is exactly what you want when you are trying to recover from a soft tissue injury. Increased extensibility and flexibilty in soft tissue means it is less likely to strain or tear further during activity, and less re-injury during this period means less setbacks during healing. Less re-injury helps minimize the build up of scar tissue around the tendon during the healing process, while also reducing the risk and severity of overcompensation pain and secondary injuries. Basically, the value of a faster recovery is often underestimated, as the impact of chronic injuries can quickly spiral out of control.

We can promise that you will receive a product that is designed to be safe and does what it is supposed to do...quickly relieve pain and aid in the recovery from tendon, muscle and other soft tissue injuries.

The unit plugs into a standard wall outlet to get its power. The nice thing about the power supply is that the same unit can be used in North America and overseas as well. It has the capability to operate between 110v and 230v. It has a special controller that can be set for 3 different power levels of application (3=High, 2=Medium, 1=Low). The cord is long so you can sit or lie comfortably and watch TV, read or surf the net while you're using it.

The safety time on the wrap is 30 minutes though our recommended treatment time is 10 minutes in duration on the low setting. The device can be worn over clothing, allowing you to use the device at work, at home, or really anywhere you have access to an electrical outlet.

When Should I Use My TShellz Wrap During the Day?

The most common question we receive from individuals prior to purchasing is - how many times a day should I be using my wrist wraps and when should I be using them? While treatment plans will differ for each individual and their specific injury, there are general guidelines that should be adhered to.

  • Use a Cold Compress or Ice Pack when you are experiencing inflammation (usually after exertion or movement of the injury area).

The Shoulder TShellz Wrap® would then be used:

  • Right after rising from bed in the morning (as this is when it is most stiff)
  • Prior to going to bed at night (to relax the wrist/hand, allowing for better sleep)
  • Before you know you will be using your injured joint (computer work, going to work, using a mobile phone, housecleaning, etc).

We believe the use of TShellz Wraps® for effective treatment of soft tissue hand and wrist injuries is one of the most under-utilized home treatment options available on the market today. We have thousands of customers that have tried many options out there and have been amazed at how effective and fast the TShellz Wrap treatment can heal soft tissue injuries.

The Key Point To Keep in Mind When Treating Your Hand/Wrist Injury

Make Sure That Complete Healing is Your #1 Goal

We all know that if the injury was healed, the pain would go away but what about the opposite situation? If the pain is gone, does that mean the injury is better? Unfortunately, this is not always true.

Too many people only focus on suppressing pain symptoms while providing less attention to the true healing aspects of the body. Experiencing less pain, while obviously a good short-term goal, never equates to underlying healing. Scar tissue can remain for months after one gets to a point of being relatively pain-free. However, as long the weak and brittle scar tissue remains, you are susceptible to re-injury or re-aggravation. Certain motions or movements can cause the weaker tissue to easily tear - resulting in some reversal of the recovery up until that point.

This is why we recommend for people to continue with their doctor or therapist recommended exercises and to continue with mild treatments of the TShellz Wrap® for a period of time - to better ensure complete healing.

Ongoing treatments to enhance circulation will soothe, relax and promote healing of your hand & wrist muscles and tendons. T•Shellz treatments will also allow your soft tissue to extend further due to the deep warming sensation created by the enhanced circulation to the treatment area. The more extensibile your tissues are, the less likely they are to strain or sprain.
